I couldn't believe the title of Ryan Murphy's (Glee) new show-The New Normal. I say that term all of the time! When working in your closet, I continually preach that what we are creating, at first seems so left field...in fact
wrong,
incorrect,
crazy and
weird. You see, your brain gets used to what you tell it. When you show it something different, at first your natural reaction is to hate it, think "
it's crazy", "
oh no, I could never".
What we really are creating is
YOUR NEW NORMAL.
There isn't a client who doesn't go through some sort of panic when we are together. It's normal. Your brain is there to protect you from experiences that could be damaging. Sometimes your brain doesn't recognize good differently from bad.
Factor in that you could be working in a highly masculine profession and a super duper smarty pants (meaning your an academic). It takes your brain a moment to switch over, allowing these new concepts in.
As a culture of what I like to call "university of same", it's become increasingly harder with business casual to step out and forge ahead. Some of you opt for fitting in while some of you may work at home and it's only the kids and your dogs who will see you that entire day. So, you think, "why bother?"
Ultimately, you have to signal to yourself that every day is the very first day of the rest of your life. If you like who you are and what is in your closet, it damn well is going to be an easier day. Clothing is essential to covering your body, being interested is not.
Navigating your day in a way where you "got this"...who doesn't want that?!
As a culture, we accept or reject in a millisecond.
If you don't like what you are wearing, how's that going to bode for your day or those around you?
Clothing is truly your secret weapon. But if you don't know how to fire the gun, than perhaps you need to learn. :)

In 1954, Coco Chanel returned to her design house to design the tweed jacket, a core staple seen in all of Chanel's collections. I guess what surprises me is that Mademoiselle Chanel designed the tweed jacket at age 71. Seen in this time as free movement and very modern to otherwise restrictive clothing , the tweed jacket was considered revolutionary.
